Commute by bike: the ultimate checklist!

So you've decided to join the club! Whether you’re a seasoned cyclist or just starting out, this guide will help you navigate the challenges of your daily commute. Let's get started:

Bike essentials

  • Lights and reflectors. Front and rear lights are a must, especially during low-light conditions.
  • Bike lock. A sturdy lock is essential to keep your bike safe when you need to leave it unattended. >> this one's a customer favorite.
  • Basic repair kit. Include a spare inner tube, tire levers, a mini pump, a multi-tool, and a patch kit. Get the right kit at the shop!
  • Invest in waterproof panniers or bike bags. These are essential for keeping your belongings dry and secure. Bungee cords can also be useful for strapping down additional items. >> we got you covered here.

Layer up!

Your clothing choices can make or break your commute, especially when the weather is unpredictable. Dressing in layers will help you stay comfortable no matter what the day throws at you.

Base Layers

  • Moisture-wicking underwear and socks. These help keep you dry by drawing sweat away from your skin.
  • Thermal base layer. Essential for colder conditions, helping you stay warm without overheating.

Rainwear

  • Waterproof and windproof jacket. Essential for staying dry in wet weather and blocking the wind. >>here's a good one.
  • Waterproof pants. Layer them on whatever you are wearing! These are our favorite essential.

Accessories

  • Cycling gloves. Choose waterproof and insulated ones if the weather calls for it.
  • Neck gaiter or scarf. Helps keep the chill off your neck and can be easily removed if it warms up.
  • Cycling cap or beanie. Fits under your helmet and keeps your head warm.
  • Waterproof shoe covers. Or opt for waterproof shoes to keep your feet dry.

Personal items

  • Phone charger. A power bank is a good backup in case your phone battery runs low.
  • Earphones or headphones. What's a commute without a good podcast?
  • Towel/toiletries. Wet wipes, deodorant, and a comb can help freshen you up after the ride. Pro-tip: dry shampoo is an underrated commute accessory!
  • Water bottle. Consider an insulated one for that sacred morning coffee.
  • Snacks. Keep your energy and morale levels up, especially if your journey is long.
  • Packed lunch.

Safety First

Last but certainly not least:

  • Helmet. Make sure it fits properly and is worn at all times. >> buy here.
  • High-visibility gear. Reflective vests, bands, or lights can significantly improve your visibility to other road users. >> here's a cool one.

Pre-Departure Checks

Now that you're packed up and ready to go, some last checks before taking off!

  • Secure your gear. Make sure everything is packed and balanced on your bike.
  • Check lights and reflectors. Ensure they are working properly.
  • Charged electronics. Ensure your phone and other devices are fully

And the holy trinity: keys, phone, wallet 👀

This sounds like a lot! But with a little bit of practice this will become second nature in no time. The more you commute, the more you’ll learn about what works best for you.
